Available from Decorative Gardens in smaller quantities or a bulk bag, Scottish cobbles and pebbles are a popular choice for gardens of all types and sizes. Scottish cobbles are essentially large pebbles, while Scottish pebbles are a smaller variety. With each bulk bag of Scottish pebbles we sell weighing in at up to 875kg, you may be wondering how to make the best use of your purchase.

The good news is, when you buy Scottish cobbles or pebbles, there are plenty of ways to use them to create a fantastic look for your outdoor space. With their range of colours, shapes and sizes (we sell Scottish pebbles measuring between 14mm and 30mm in diameter), they can add an exciting and low maintenance look to a variety of different areas.

Driveways and paths

Our Scottish pebbles are perfect for driveways: unlike smaller pebbles, they won't get stuck in car tyre treads. In addition, they're large enough that they are comfortable and easy to walk on, which also makes them a great choice for garden paths.

Using Scottish pebbles to line your garden paths is a great, low maintenance way to add to a country cottage feel to your property and outdoor space.

Rockeries

Whether Alpine, Mediterranean, Oriental or another style altogether, your home rock garden can look even more incredible with the addition of Scottish pebbles. They're the perfect surround for low maintenance plants like cacti and alpine plants, but can also be moved easily if you want to change the look and feel of your rockery. Thanks to their muted colours, they'll give a great contrast when paired with vibrant greenery, meaning your choice of rockery plants will really stand out.

Planter toppers

If your outdoor space features plenty of planters, why not consider using Scottish pebbles as a topping, surrounding their contents? Not only will they look fantastic and add a splash of texture and colour, but they're also fantastic at helping to retain moisture by reducing the surface area from which it can evaporate.

Ponds, streams and water features

One of the many fantastic features of Scottish pebbles is that they come to life even more when they are wet. While their colours are fairly muted when dry, the addition of water creates a shiny, shimmering effect, and every single one of their colours becomes more prominent.

They are perfect for fish ponds as they're fish-friendly; there's no danger of them being mistakenly ingested by wildlife. If you're planning on using them in an environment where fish are present, though, we would advise washing them before use. And if you have a stream that runs through your garden, they're comfortable and easy to walk on, making them a great choice for those with kids who love to splash around.

They also work perfectly in other water features, like waterfalls and rock garden-style water features, where the constant splashes of water against the pebbles creates some fantastic colours and water can still permeate through to the base.

Seaside properties

If your property is by the beach and you're looking to create an outdoor space that reflects its geography, then Scottish pebbles can work wonders. These pebbles are a great way to replicate shingle beaches and can add to the overall look and feel of a seaside-themed garden, whether it's alongside boat-shaped planters, palm trees, or the other elements of your choice.

Which size is right for my needs?

At Decorative Gardens, we sell our Scottish pebbles in three different sizes: 8-14mm, 14-20mm, and 20-33mm. The size you choose may depend on what you are planning to use them for. Some people, for example, prefer not to use the smallest pebbles for driveways and paths, but instead go for a larger size. You will also want to consider the likely movement of your pebbles: in high-traffic areas of the garden, for example, some will prefer to use larger pebble sizes to avoid them being spread into areas where they are not wanted. With garden paths, borders and driveways, bear in mind that an average depth of 50mm of gravel is often needed, with some choosing a depth of 75mm for driveways, which can have an impact on your choice. Whatever you fancy using your bulk bag Scottish pebbles for, browse our range and you'll find a whole host of options to choose from that will suit every need.
